He is currently involved in the\nArctic Biomonitoring project which looks to quantify the relationship between\nbiological indicators and environmental gradients in the north. Specifically, Djuradj\naims to refine the taxonomic resolution in samples collected with hopes to\noptimize the detection of community gradients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Life back home<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Serbia, Djuradj works at the University of Ni\u0161 specializing in freshwater community ecology. Recently,\nhe has become interested in using metacommunity approaches in bioassessments of\naquatic ecosystems.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of research, he teaches courses including\nbiomonitoring, environmental protection, R for biologists as well as a European\nworkshop for chironomid identification taught in countries like Slovakia, Czech\nRepublic and soon to be South Korea this year. Inspired by his mentors who taught\nand accommodated him during his PhD, Djuradj offers free training to young researchers\nto assist them over the steep learning curve. \u201cYou only need one week to get\nused to the key features and identification procedures but after that you can work\nunder minimal supervision. Receiving help in the first stage is important.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his free time, he enjoys water-related sports such as\nswimming and scuba diving but also likes to cook and play piano. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advice for future PhD\nstudents<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most important step is to research your supervisor.\nChoose someone who is involved in the science aspect,\u201d he says, \u201cBe cautious\nabout choosing someone that could be too busy for you.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On life at Dalhousie University Djuradj is a postdoctoral fellow and an expert taxonomist in the diverse group of non-biting midges (also known as chironomids) like Andrew.
